16 September 2024 Clarisa Chipfupa and Glenville Dantu were crowned winners of round 10 in the 2024 Nedbank for Good Series, held at the Windhoek Golf and Country Club last Saturday.
The event lived up to its expectations, with 99 amateur golfers thronging the green lushes of the Windhoek Golf and Country Club to participate in the golf tournament.
Of the 99, 11 were women, the biggest number of women participants in the tournament so far.
The defending women’s champion, Chipfupa, scored 41 points to claim victory ahead of Natasja Louw, who scored 37 points in second place, and Jolene van Schoor, who scored 36 points in third place.
Speaking after the games, Chipfupa said it was a great game, and praised the other ladies who participated, saying they are inspiring the next generation of female golf players.
"Beginning with a par on the first hole boosted my confidence for the day. There were one or two disappointing holes, but I kept encouraging myself. The team that I played with also played a big role in motivating me. Being the defending champion also motivated me to do well here,” she said.
Chipfupa, who only started playing golf three years ago after being persuaded by her husband for over three years, called on other women to join her on the course, saying the sport is not only for men.
“Golf is a game for everyone. I find it so relaxing because my week is very hectic and my life in general is very busy as I am a wife, a mother, and a professional. I find my time at the course relaxing. So, I would encourage the ladies out there to come and join in on the games,” she said.
Chipfupa said as a person who is passionate about charity, she will prepare well for the finals in Omeya next month.
In the men’s competition, Dantu scored 46 points as he took victory ahead of Clyde Besser, who scored 41 points in second place, and Lucky Ngwenya, who scored 40 points in third place.
Dantu stated that his strategy was to play the shots well, control the course, and play manageable shots.
Speaking about the objectives of the Nedbank for Good series this year, Dantu said, “For me, any benefit you can give to the farmers, especially during the current drought season that the country is facing, and the fact that I have family members who are farmers as well, makes me try hard to give back to the community. Our company, which also sponsored my team today, tries to assist the farmers in every way possible, including installing solar pumps and solar, as a give-back initiative.”
At the prizegiving, Nedbank Namibia Executive for Wealth Management and Bancassurance, Biniam Ghirmatsion, pledged the bank's continued support for the initiative, saying they are proud of the milestones reached by the Nedbank for Good Series recently.
“Over the past years, this event has gone from strength to strength. I also know that every year, the number of players is increasing. We are proud to have reached the N$1 million mark, which benefits various charities across Namibia,” Ghirmatsion said.
This year's series proceeds go directly to Agra ProVision, which aims to train, service, and support underserved agricultural communities.
The 2024 Nedbank for Good Series finals will be at Omeya on 4 October.
